A Centre for Christian Worship & Community Life - Serving The Community Of Headless Cross & Southcrest
The Bridge is an Local Ecumenical Partnership between the former St. Luke's Church and Headless Cross Methodist Church.
On 19th October 2008 at the Methodist Church, in the presence of the Bishop of Worcester, Rev’d John Inge, the Chairman of the Methodist District, Rev’d Bill Anderson, and the Mayor of Redditch, Mr. Jack Field and other dignitaries the ‘Declaration of Intent’ was signed. On Ash Wednesday, 25th February 2009, Headless Cross Methodist Church and St. Luke’s became one church.
The Ecumenical Partnership formed by the merger of Headless Cross Methodist Church and St. Luke's Church is to be called 'The Bridge - a centre for Christian worship and community life'.
Members of the joint congregation were invited to suggest names for the new church, and these were then publicised at a meeting with opportunity for further comments to be made. The newly formed Ecumenical Church Council made a recommendation based on the suggestions and the final decision was made by ballot with a clear majority responding favourably to the new name.
Rev Maureen Dew said: “The Christian church understands the significance of a change of name, Simon the fisherman, one of the first disciples, had his name changed to Peter (Cephas) by Jesus when they first met, and after his life-changing experience on the road to Damascus, Saul began to be called Paul.
“The change of name on these and other occasions suggests a new relationship and commitment to Jesus Christ, and this must surely be our aim as a new church seeking to serve our community.”
Rev Julia Pellett, Methodist superintendent minister, said: “After six months of alternating between two buildings, the new name will finally help us settle as we put down our roots in the one church, in the former St Luke’s building from September 6th 2009. This will be an historic moment in the life of our church and Headless Cross, and we’re eager to celebrate this.”
Discussions are ongoing regarding the building of a new community centre for community life that will join the church in some way, and which will allow for greater flexibility, improved provision and access, and development potential for new users and the present groups who meet at the church halls.
